It is a widely held belief that foreign language teaching can make an influential
contribution to learners’ views of the people and culture whose language they are
being taught, but what about other cultures and peoples? This paper is aimed at
educators in the tourism sector and examines some of the solutions recently
proposed by foreign language professionals to help reduce the superficial views
often held of the way that foreign people live their daily lives. These are relevant
not only to those of us involved directly in language teaching, but to educators of all
disciplines.
