Exotisme i primitivisme: la invenció de l’alteritat. El cas de Paul Gauguin

Abstract

The contradictions of European society will find in late 20th century art one of the elements bringing about more changes to the cultural scenario. Thus, beyond the tension between Tradition and Modernity, plastic arts will bring to light new problems and, particularly, an attempt for unexpected solutions that question classic a esthetic theories. All of which is included into a new confrontation between the Western world and the other civilizations, which implies a reflection on the limitations of cultural creation itself, as marked by the concepts of primitivism and exoticism. Paul Gauguin is probably the most paradigmatic case of this current.

Les contradiccions de la societat europea trobaran en l’art de finals del segle XX un dels elements que més alterarà el paisatge cultural. Així, rere la tensió entre Tradició i Modernitat, les arts plàstiques portaran a la llum pública noves problemàtiques i, sobretot, un intent de solucions inesperades que qüestionen les teories estètiques clàssiques. Tot plegat s’inscriu en una nova confrontació entre Occident i les altres civilitzacions, que comporta una reflexió sobre els límits de la pròpia creació cultural, marcada pels conceptes de primitivisme i exotisme. Paul Gauguin en serà, segurament, el cas més paradigmàtic.
