Between 1890 and 1936, Catalonia was able to put its journalism at practically the same height as those of the great Western powers. The change is parallel to the transformation of the Catalan society into a mass society which, as such, demands a certain type of news papers and so a certain way of producing them. The transformation emerged at all levels: entrepreneurial, journalistic, that of design, of genres... with a force that only the Spanish Civil War was able to truncate in 1936. Even today the Catalan press and the press in Catalonia have not yet recovered the quality and rich ness achieved at that time.eng
