dc.description.abstract | This study investigates the impact of binaural beats on working memory in the context of additional language learning. Binaural beats are auditory illusions created by presenting two slightly different frequencies to each ear. The difference between the two frequencies creates a third tone, which is perceived as a pulsing sound that can affect brain waves. The difference between the two frequencies generates a rhythmic pulsation that can be perceived as a beat. The brain then synchronizes its neural activity with the perceived frequency, leading to changes in cognitive processes. An increasing number of studies have suggested that binaural beats can be used to alter or enhance cognitive processes., learners can increase their attentional resources which can enhance focus and memory. The purpose of this study was to determine whether binaural beats can enhance student ́s working memory retention in additional language learning. To achieve this goal, two memory tests were given to a group of 120 students at a private school in Cataluña, Spain. Both memory tests were carried out in the same format, however the second test also required students to listen to 40Hz binaural beats through earphones during both the learning and testing phases. The quantitative data analysis showed that binaural beats had a negative impact on the working memory on most students who participated in the study. However, there were some positive findings and many students reported that they would consider using binaural beats as a study tool in the future. This discrepancy between the negative impact on test scores and the willingness to consider using binaural beats in the future is an interesting finding that demands a full evaluation of the procedure used in this study and investigation on how better to use binaural beats in the additional language classroom of the future. | ca |
