Sobrecarga emocional del cuidador informal en pacientes con un trastorno esquizofrénico

Abstract

El desarrollo de los tratamientos comunitarios de las enfermedades mentales crónicas y graves tras la reforma psiquiátrica ha supuesto una sobrecarga para los familiares cuidadores de los pacientes. En el presente estudio, evaluamos la carga emocional de 23 cuidadores informales de pacientes diagnosticados con un trastorno esquizofrénicos, comprobando si existe algún tipo de relación entre la sobrecarga experimentada y las variables sociodemográficas: género, ingresos, nivel de estudios del cuidador informal, así como, el género del paciente y la cronicidad de la enfermedad. Viendo así, si estas variables ejercen algún tipo de influencia en su salud física y emocional del cuidador, o bien es un desencadenante de una disminución en el bienestar, capacidad funcional y calidad de vida. El instrumento utilizado, fue el Test de Sobrecarga Zarit. Los resultados obtenidos, demostraron la presencia de un nivel moderado de sobrecarga entre los cuidadores informales, además, únicamente se obtuvieron diferencias significativas respecto al género de los cuidadores. La línea de investigación de este estudio y otros similares, tienen una especial relevancia, tanto en el desarrollo de los programas específicos psicoeducativos, como para la orientación y el soporte a las familias de pacientes con algún tipo de trastorno mental severo.

The development of the community treatment for chronic and severe mental illness after the psychiatric reform has resulted in a burden being placed upon the family caregivers of patients. In the present study, we evaluated the emotional burden of 23 caregivers of patients diagnosed with a disorder schizophrenia, checking if there is some kind of relationship between the dimensions of the family burden and the characteristics of the gender of the patient, the income, the level of education of the caregiver, as well as the gender of the patient and the chronicity of the disease. The instrument used, was the Zarit overload Test. The results showed that most of the caregivers experience a high degree of overload, and also, that there were only statistic differences between the genders of the caregivers, affirming that women have higher levels of overload. The studies of the effect of mental illness on the family have major implication in the fields of both psychiatric management and social policy.
